Jam-packed with death, dread, drama, and many other words beginning with “d,” The Last of August is the latest of Brittany Cavallaro’s Charlotte Holmes series. When the duo of detectives must travel to Berlin to investigate, their relationship begins to fray after someone from Charlotte’s past shows up. Charlotte’s uncle has gone missing and nobody seems to know where he is. Here’s an overview of the plot: Ah, Christmas time is here, but not everything is going well for Charlotte and Jamie. Okay, now onto book two: The Last of August. It just turned into a bit of a muddled mess.Ĭat picture translation: I thought… -sniff- …it was going to be better than that… Cavallaro had spent more time on some aspects and less time on others. I had to go back and re-read it to fully understand.
There were so many twist and turns that it became hard to follow and left me wondering what was going on. She slowly develops their relationship in a believable way that weaves both hilarity and conflict together.īut this was overshadowed by the weakness of the plot. They are so unlike each other that it seems like they could never be friends, but that’s where Ms. Jamie is so loyal and kind, and Charlotte is– for lack of a better word– so detective-y. In a struggle to prove their innocence, Jamie learns about the art of deduction, lying, and sleuthing– and they may just learn a few things about each other along the way.įull of mystery, secrets, suspense, and (sometimes) fun, A Study in Charlotte is a refreshing take on the old classic. A student has just been murdered, and Charlotte and Jamie are being framed.
